University Wide Committees, Commissions and Boards
Names of staff interested in service on University wide committees are submitted to the Provost's Office, which makes the final decision about who serves on each committee. If you have any questions about these committees, please send an email to unsenate@ku.edu.
If you are interested in serving on any of the committees below please fill out the Committee Form. Be sure to also review the Governance and Unclassified Senate committee opportunities. Vacancies are noted in red.
Campus United Way Committee
The Campus United Way Committee plans and executes the United Way fund drive on campus, working in coordination with the community United Way Committee. The committee meets during the summer and fall, with work concluding late in the fall semester. Membership includes one classified and one unclassified staff member. This service may be performed by the president of the organization or by a representative. Paul Farran, new president, would welcome nominations or self-nominations.
Disciplinary Action Hearing Board for University Support Staff
The purpose of this board is to provide an avenue of appeal for University Support Staff (USS) employees who are facing suspension, demotion, or dismissal. The board has five members—three USS, one faculty member, and one member of the unclassified professional staff—appointed by the Provost upon nomination from the respective governance organizations. The Provost also appoints an alternate for each position, because when an appeal is being heard, no member of the board can be from the same department as those involved in the appeal. Guidelines for the board. Current unclassified members of the board are Annette Delaney, Kansas Geological Survey, and Noelle Kurth, Center for Research on Learning (alternate).
Employee Recognition Committee
The Employee Recognition Committee selects the classified and unclassified employees of the month and year, and plans the fall retirement dinner for classified staff and the annual recognition ceremony in the spring. This committee meets four times a year (September, December, March, and April). The committee is comprised of 17 classified and unclassified staff committee members, including one representative of the Provost Office and one representative of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity. The majority alternates between USS and unclassified staff on a yearly basis; members usually serve staggered four-year terms. Members need to reserve at least four hours for most meetings and a full day for the March session. Current unclassified members and the years remaining in their terms are as follows:
| Name and Department | Term |
|---|---|
| Jim Modig, Design and Construction Management | 1 year |
| Amy Wierman, Engineering | 2 years |
| Jennifer Brooks, Animal Care | 2 years |
| Jane Tuttle, Student Success | 2 years |
For 2008-2009, unclassified members will be in the majority (9 members). At least 4 and possibly 5 new unclassified representatives will be needed, depending on whether a USS or unclassified staff member is appointed as the Provost Office representative.
NOTE: Because this committee must be broadly representative of the University community, the Provost usually avoids appointing more than one person from the same office.Transit Commission
This commission was formed in 2007 to assume the responsibilities formerly held by the KU on Wheels Transportation Board and the Provost-appointed Transit Committee. The commission’s structure and functions parallel those of the University Parking Commission and the “Transit Commission Rules” are patterned on those of the Parking Commission. The Transit Commission develops and recommends to the Provost general policies for the management of transit services for the University. This commission meets at least monthly. One classified staff and one University Support Staff member serve three year terms and may serve consecutive terms. Nominations are submitted to the provost, who makes the appointments. More information about University Transit is available on the Parking & Transit web site, www.parking.ku.edu. Aaron Quisenberry, Student Involvement and Leadership Center, represents the unclassified staff; his term expires in 2010.
