Executive Board Meetings Minutes
Wednesday,
July 18, 2001
12:00-1:30,
Alcove A, Kansas Union
Attending: Eric Jeppesen
(President), David Burge (Chair, Public Relations) Alisa Branham
(Secretary), Mark Nesbitt-Daly, Chair, Governance and Representation,
Sandra Wick, (Past President), Thelma Simons, (President Elect),
Kathryn Tuttle, (Representative), Joe Potts (Representative).
Agenda
Minutes from June
2001: The former secretary is sending them electronically to
Alisa, who will forward them to the board next week along
with these minutes. Alisa suggested posting minutes on the web
site so all members can read them. David will do this; he has been
working on the new site this summer.
Treasurer's Report:
Not in attendance.
President's Report:
Nothing to report.
Committee Reports:
Discussions focused on two subjects: the UPSA web site and plans
for speakers/topics at general meetings in the upcoming year.
Thelma Simons demonstrated
David's new web site design, which is modeled after the main KU
design. This is not live yet, since they want our feedback first.
The Board discussed the use of a listserve to send notices about
UPSA meetings and to send the newsletter online. Thelma will arrange
to do an Exchange list to notify all unclassified staff (once) of
their addition to the UPSA listserve with an option to "unsubscribe."
We will continue to offer an option to "subscribe" for others who
might want to be informed as well. Thelma suggests we explore options
for a new UPSA logo. Mark will call Lois Greene at Fine Arts to
see if graphic design students could do this as a project. David
will email the new web address to board members so we can review
the new site and make comments. Old site hasn't been updated for
3 years. David invites us to send him new pictures featuring staff
that could be added to the site.
Eric reiterated the suggestion
from the last meeting to invite Janet Murguia, the new Executive
Vice-Chancellor for University Relations, to a general UPSA meeting
in September. According to the bylaws, we should be holding four
general meetings annually. The Executive Board meets every second
Tuesday of the month; I suggested we go to Pearson sometime and
David suggested the Visitor's Center as well. Kathryn suggested
getting Sandy Praeger and/or Barbara Ballard to speak, which prompted
discussion of proper timing for effectiveness of getting our views
to the legislature. It was decided that November, prior to Thanksgiving,
would be better than spring, and that we might consider Tom Sloan
and Troy Findley, too. Sandy suggested an "eggs and issues" format,
not a formal panel discussion. We will seek CJ Brune's suggestions
too, since she worked on Findley's campaign. Everyone agreed that
we should ask Clay Blair, head of the Board of Regents, to come
in February.
Finally, Kathryn suggested
an article for the newsletter, highlighting those unclassified who
teach at KU. Teaching is yet another way that unclassifed staff
contribute to the university but few people know this. Joe asked
why we couldn't be paid extra to teach, as other colleges do, which
would be a good question for Ola Faucher.
Meeting adjourned at
1:15.
Next Board meeting:
Tuesday, September 11, 12-1:30, Alcove A, Kansas Union
(no meeting in August)
