Minutes from
UPSA Executive Board Meeting
Tuesday, April 9, 2002

Attending: Eric Jeppesen (President), Thelma Simons, (President Elect), Alisa Branham (Secretary), Mark Nesbitt-Daly (Chair, Governance and Representation), Ola Faucher (Human Resources), Barb McClain (Representative), Kathy Stiers (Classified Representative), Sandra Wick (Past President), Susan Sloop (Treasurer), Joe Potts (Representative).

Minutes of the last meeting were approved.Ê Eric provided an agenda for this meeting.

Eric reported on SenEx: Their discussion of 54 upper-division hours continues.Ê Justin Mills says students will vote against the newest tuition plan since $43 million figure did not include 20% for financial aid, which brings the total to $51 million.Ê SenEx will talk more about the tuition increase today.

Eric met with Provost regarding tuition remission or reduction for KU faculty, staff and families.Ê Regents are looking at this now.Ê Hemenway raised the number eligible for tuition assistance program after he arrived.Ê Thelma will continue working on this issue next year.

Mark reported that Governance and Representation has not met.

Eric talked about Budget:Ê Appears KU may only have a 2.5% cut now, not the 6% previously proposed, so there may be fewer or no staff layoffs.Ê Still no money for higher insurance costs or mid-year raises.

Treasurer's Report (Susan): UPSA budget started year at $2655.Ê Paid $472 for printing and $1045 for travel awards to 6 people.Ê Susan suggests we review processes for spending money.Ê Should be little expense with upcoming ballot, since we hope to do it electronically.Ê Mark suggested we send a message to Deans/Directors/etc. regarding availability of travel grants through UPSA to better advertise this, since we have money left in the current year.

Kathy reported on Classified Senate: Lots of talk regarding layoffs.Ê They surveyed employees to see if they wanted to be employees of the state or of the university.Ê Good response rate but responses were not definitive.

Ola reported: Substance Abuse Policy is being reviewed by legal counsel.

Discussion of upcoming officer elections: Thelma has recruited Julie Loats to put ballots on-line.Ê Several UPSA members have recruited potential candidates and the slate should be finalized by Monday.

Meeting adjourned at 1:00.Ê
