Minutes from
UPSA Executive Board Meeting
Tuesday, August 13, 2002

Attending:Ê Thelma Simons (president), Jeannette Johnson, Danny Kaiser, Pam Houston, Donna Hultine (secretary), Kathy Stiers (classified senate), Dan Consolver (treasurer), Mark Nesbitt-Daly, Joe Potts, Jill Hummels, Ola Faucher

Minutes:Ê Minutes from the July 9, 2002 Executive Board meeting were approved as submitted.

TreasurerÕs Report:Ê Consolver reported that the treasurerÕs notebook has been misplaced but confirmed with Kathy Reed in Governance a carry forward balance of $12.90.Ê An award of $425.00 to Steve Ramirez ended up being paid for by his department.Ê This encumbrance will go toward his expenses of around $200.Ê Reed will make a request to Lindy Eakin for a carry forward of the balance so itÕs possible there will be a different carry forward balance into FY Õ03.

There was lengthy discussion about whether we should continue to fund a few individuals or try to benefit the largest number of people by bringing professional development opportunities to campus.

The consensus was to focus on group activities this year, bring in speakers.Ê Simons will discuss this with Sally Hayden to see if there are already professional development grant requests in process.

PresidentÕs Report:

SimonsÕ meeting with the Provost is scheduled for tomorrow.Ê Representatives from FacEx, Classified Senate, University Council and UPSA will be present.Ê Simons asked for topics.

Suggestions included budget cuts as they impact unclassified staff, furloughs (mandatory leave without pay), how the tuition increase is being used, and whether there is any new information on the Student Services area possible reorganization.Ê

Simons also brought up that in a meeting of network administrators, John Lewis from NTS talked about possibly requiring all departments to have one person named as system administrator who is available to NTS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Simons talked about a recent Journal World article titled ÒWage Gap Widens at KUÓ.Ê She called the reporter Terry Rombeck to find out where regular unclassified employees fit into this picture.Ê Rombeck said he went with the information he was provided.Ê The article mentions that there are fewer classified positions but Simons points out that many of these positions probably went to unclassified from classified.

Committees:Ê No Governance and Representation or Professional Reports were given.Ê Hummels (Public Relations) thought that an idea for a Òrumor controlÓ Web site was good.Ê We should promote the next general meeting on September 20 with a Provost blanket e-mail.

Classified Senate:Ê Stiers reported that classified senate was discussing a position paper for 2003.Ê They still want step movement and cost of living adjustments, and possibly being vested in KPERS at 5 years instead of 10 to stop turnover and continue longevity.

Human Relations:Ê Faucher shared the ÒStaff Tuition Assistance ProfileÓ, that details the numbers of classified and unclassified staff awarded tuition assistance from 2000 through 2002.Ê She also provided a list of topics suggested for training and professional development gathered from the Workplace Climate Survey.

Of the current Human Resources training offerings, most unclassified staff attend the Covey Programs ø 4 Roles of Leadership and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People; the ÒType in OrganizationsÓ and the STEP program.

She is working with Watkins Health Center on a University sponsored weight management program.

Old Business: The fall general meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 20th at noon in Alderson Auditorium.

New Business :It was suggested that we spend some time looking at the unclassified service at KUÉwho we are, what services we provide, etc.Ê Faucher will provide some information about existing title breakdowns.

The meeting adjourned at 1:25 pm.
