Minutes from
UPSA Executive Board Meeting
Tuesday, July 9, 2002

Attending:Ê Thelma Simons (president), Jeannette Johnson, Kathryn Tuttle, Danny Kaiser, Donna Hultine (secretary), Eric Jeppesen, Kathy Stiers (classified senate), Dan Consolver (treasurer), Ola Faucher-

Minutes: Minutes from the June 11, 2002 Executive Board meeting were approved as submitted.-

TreasurerÕs Report: Consolver reported that we now have a balance of $12.90.Ê $600 has been spent since our last meeting.Ê Consolver noted that no out of state travel will be allowed from Ò003Ó funds this year.Ê If we grant any, weÕll have to do some Òfund tradingÓ.Ê Consolver will get more details about this.

Consolver wondered if a survey could be done or if there is a source that can tell us whatÕs being spent by departments for professional development for unclassified staff.ÊÊ Simons advised that we can get information from the Computer Center about unclassified staff members taking advantage of their training opportunities.Ê Faucher said the same for training opportunities at Human Resources.Ê She also said that she could share information on those who have taken advantage of the tuition assistance program.Ê It was noted that UPSA used to offer professional development training that would benefit more staff, rather than the individuals we are helping now and that the original idea of the Professional Development Grants was to supplement those who couldnÕt get support from their own departments.Ê The consensus was not to do a survey to gather this information at this time.

UPSA bylaws call for four general meetings a year and Simons suggested that one or two of these could offer a professional development topic.Ê Faucher will provide topic ideas from the workplace climate survey.Ê Tuttle also suggested that we take advantage of on campus talent.

PresidentÕs Report:

SenEx Meetings: New charges to the various committees and boards have been written and will be presented at University CouncilÕs meeting in August.Ê SenEx will meet again on August 27th.Ê Simons mentioned a continuing charge for the Planning and Resources Committee that called for "establishing a free-standing formal structure for the Unclassified Professional Staff." Since this basically describes UPSA, she questioned this charge and the charge was subsequently removed.

Meetings with Provost: Simons' first monthly meeting with the Provost is August 14

Committees: No committee reports were given.

Classified Senate: Stiers had nothing to report from Classified Senate.

Human Resources: Faucher reported that the volunteer summer leave program had between 23 and 25 participants for $33,000 in gross salary savings.Ê All categories of employees took advantage of the program.Ê Some units asked if the program could be extended beyond the summer since busy times vary in different units.

HR is having good success with placing classified employees who have been laid off.Ê She noted itÕs not as easy with some of the unclassified positions that are so specialized.

Faucher noted that there was a large increase in the cost of health insurance for GTAÕs.

Starting in the fall they will be doing job title studies in unclassified areas.

Old Business:

Meeting Schedules: Schedule conflicts for some executive board members have prompted a change to Thursdays at noon.Ê Simons will send out a schedule.

Topics for Fall General Meeting: Tuttle suggested Rick SnyderÕs research on hope as a topic.Ê It was also suggested that we tap Janet Murguia for a general meeting, and repeat the popularÊ ÒQuestion the AdministratorÓ session with Provost Shulenburger.Ê Johnson suggested that we schedule with the Provost as soon as possible due to his calendar, probably sometime mid-September.-

Open House: There was no interest in staffing a table for the Open House as many unclassified employees will probably already be working Open House for their departments.

New Business:

UPSA Brochure: There was some discussion about whether UPSA should print a new brochure.Ê No consensus was reached.Ê It was also noted that providing information through e-mail and the web is much less expensive.

The meeting adjourned at 12:50 pm.
