President's Report

Houston reported that we had a good visit day at the Capitol.  Schedules for the day got changed at the last minute but it is difficult to be able to schedule these visits in advance.  Nesbitt-Daly did a heck of a job doing the scheduling!

Hummert thought it would be a good idea to meet with local representatives we know and have their colleagues we might not know (or who don't know us) scheduled in the same meeting.

Consolver asked that the prep meeting be several days in advance next year.

Houston advised that David Adkins encouraged more letter writing – he said they rarely hear from faculty and staff.

Hummert said that Paul Davis told him we do not invite them to enough events where we will be.  J. Johnson said if we do this it must be coordinated through University Relations.

Nesbitt-Daly wondered if the Board of Regents should also be inviting them to various activities across the state.

There was a lot of discussion about invitations and how to coordinate – someone would have to take care of the details of their visits, i.e. parking. We would need a central clearing house with their interests if we know them.

J. Johnson asked if anyone talked to Senator Lyon. Consolver had.  He is a conservative republican.  He had a lot of questions – he's an engineer, his constituency is largely rural.  He was very interested in the rising tuition cost and learning more about KU, and the undocumented aliens getting in state tuition issue.

The next general meeting will feature Kevin Boatright, March 31st.  We need to hold another general meeting. We had talked about the Edwards Campus.  We also talked about other ideas for professional development.  The state's Certified Public Manager Program was brought up for the topics it contains.  Paul Steuwe a Lawrence High history teacher presents a history piece to the CPM program that is very interesting.  We also discussed a possible Edwards Campus/Medical Center combo presentation.  Simons mentioned something called "Appreciative Inquiry" – a different perspective on how to look at things.

We discussed ways to spend our money.  Houston wondered if we should hire someone who works for UPSA to maintain the web site, to the scheduling for legislative visits, etc.  J. Johnson wondered where they would be housed and who would monitor their work.  Houston talked about just hiring someone to do a project, i.e. comparisons of titles and salaries across campuses in the Big XII.  We discussed using Molly Mulloy's office but J. Johnson worried about overloading them.  Simons advised that she used them when she was UPSA president.

Classified Senate

Linda Fund attended the classified senate meeting.  There will be a new classified evaluation form. It should be shorter and will be web based.

Committee Reports

University Council -

J. Johnson advised that the basketball ticket issue is all settled by now.  Jason O'Connor is our representative on the 3 person appeals committee.

SenEx

Houston advised that the Athletic Board would be the topic at the next University Council meeting.  Bylaws say the current group has certain authority but apparently they don't, the NCAA would not allow it.  They are recommending a 5 person board, also advisory and ultimately the Chancellor will have control.
