The meeting was called to order by 2005-06 President Mark Nesbitt-Daly.

The first order of business was the approval of the April 13, 2006 minutes. The minutes were approved with one change under 6. HREO third bullet. This should read: Is this the last year for funding unclassified staff raises through tuition enhancement? Yes.

The next order of business was election of 2006-07 Unclassified Senate Executive Officers. The positions were described in detail and then elected as noted under New Business.

Standing Reports:

  1. President: Mark Nesbitt-Daly reported that there are still a few rules that need massaging from the change to Unclassified Senate from Unclassified Professional Staff Association and that we need to work on how to implement some of the changes. Most committee are resting for the summer, but all charges are listed on the University Governance  web site. A representative from University Support Staff and Student Senate regularly attend our meetings and we would like to see if someone from Faculty Senate would be willing to attend as well.
  1. University Support Staff: Maxine Younes reported that they will be having their annual retreat on July 20th and at that time will be working to find direction in their duties in the system since they changed from Classified Staff to University Support Staff. There is a Kansas Council that is a group of classified staff in Kansas and they are trying to decide if they could benefit from being part of this group. The University of Kansas system is a little different now because their benefits come from the state but their salaries and raises come from the University. She asked for a volunteer to attend their meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of the month and Kathy Sheldon volunteered.
  1. Student Senate: no report
  1. Treasurer: not present so Mark Nesbitt-Daly reported that we have approximately $1700 and no outstanding bills. He plans to ask to have this money rolled over to the next fiscal year.
  1. Committee Reports:
    1. Governance and Representation: There is a survey in process that they will continue to work on over the summer and hopefully have a report on progress for us in August
    2. Professional Development: no report
    3. Public Relations: no report
    4. Elections (ad-hoc): Aaron Brown reported that elections are complete and the group congratulated his committee on a job well-done. They are working on some reports that they will prepare this summer and have ready for the August meeting.
    5. There are several other University committees that we need to look at and elect/appoint members to. All are listed on our web site. Jeanette Johnson will serve on ??? with Mark Nesbitt-Daly and Danny Kaiser.

Old Business: no additional business

New Business:

  1. Election Results:
  • President Elect - Danny Kaiser
  • Secretary - Angie Claussen
  • Treasurer - Angie Loving
  • Governance  & Representation Chair - Paul Farran
  • Professional  Development  Chair - John Augusto
  • Public Relations Chair - Thelma Simons
  • Ad Hoc/Elections Chair - Rick Whitmore
  1. How is the money for Unclassified Senate generated?

Our budget comes from University Allocation and is state money, this money does not carry forward though we have requested in the past. The group needs to think of other ways to spend our money. This year it was primarily spent on a bus to take staff to the Edwards Campus. In the past the money has been spent to bring in a speaker or help someone attend a conference (this way was not recommended to continue).

Announcements:

The Senate thanked Mark Nesbitt-Daly and the honors program for lunch and the meeting space.

The dates for the 2006-07 Unclassified Senate meetings were announced September 14, November 9, February 8, April 12, June 14 all from noon – 1:30 with locations TBA. If anyone has ideas for meeting places please let Jason know – we need to be able to eat lunch and conduct our meeting. Executive officers will meet on the alternating months.

Having no further business, Mark Nesbitt-Daly adjourned the meeting at 1:25 p.m.
