Reports:
President – Danny Kaiser
Thanks to all of the senators over this past year.
University Governance is still discussing the misconduct that is academic in nature and the withdrawal policy. Also discussed were the academic computing needs for future of the University of Kansas.
There is a University Senate task force developed to study benefits from a broad sense. This idea actually came about from an Unclassified Senate discussion on the needs for partner benefits. Our group decided that the entire university needed to review our policies and look at what other state universities are doing and what the private sector schools are doing. The committee is made up of retiring University Senate chair Bill Crowe, University Support Staff, Unclassified Staff, student, and a Faculty Executive Committee member. This is a high level of representation for Unclassified Senate so Danny is excited.
Another group is working to update the handbook for faculty and unclassified staff. Faculty Senate will conduct the review and they have asked for two Unclassified Senate members to be on this committee. Jane Tuttle and Dan Consolver will be our representatives and Danny will be the liaison with the executive committee. They have begun meeting so will continue to move forward.
Thanks for serving on all of the committees and boards this year. Danny is sure this will continue next year under Paul’s leadership.
Presentation of outgoing senator certificates. The following senators have completed their term upon completion of this meeting. Some will continue but the Senate wanted to give them a token of appreciation with a certificate. They are: John Augusto, Beth Baca (not present), Dan Consolver, Ronda Consolver, Jeannette Johnson, Angie Loving, Lucille Marino, Cathy Sheldon, Thelma Simons, Dee Steinle, Susan Teague.

Secretary: Angie Claussen
Please let Paul or me know if you will not be able to attend a meeting.

Treasurer: Noelle Kurth
Lisa was unable to attend today so she showed Noelle how to do this.
We have a balance of $3,771.18 and we will be putting in a request to carry forward to next year. Photo bill for last year was paid and we will have one for today. All other bills have been paid

Governance and Representation Chair: Phil Wilke
The committee’s final report has been submitted to the president. This includes recommendations based on the survey done at the tail end of 2007. The group had been given some broad topics to explore for the year and they ended up having four subcommittees that explored options and have taken some action and have others that will be taken forward to next year. For all of the greatest hits, please see the report on the web site. There are working points to go forward from here for next year. If you have questions you can contact Phil – his info is at the top of the report. Danny thanked him for his work this past year

Professional Development Chair: Heidi Simon
Heidi commented on how Phil did outstanding job this year and that he is a hard act to follow. Being a committee chair is all about surrounding yourself with good people as they do all the work. Heidi had all committee members stand to be recognized and thanked them for doing a great job and planning so many events.
There were two themes – Behind the Scenes at KU for fall and Wellness at KU for spring. The report of the committee is on the web site or you can contact Heidi and she can email it out to you. The highlights were the event at the University Theatre where 20 people attended, the Brown Bag lunch with Provost with over 100 people attending, the Wheat State Whirlwind Tour with 35 people,  Athletics after the Orange Bowl where 70 people attended, and the Watkins Memorial Health Center Tour and Student Recreation Center Tour.
Next year the committee is planning six events and it was determined that the Wheat State Whirlwind Tour needs to happen every year and rotate fall and spring semesters. The Provost brown bag is another even they would like to continue every year. They would like to see if they can expand and try to do the KC Corporate Challenge which is a series of athletic events that corporations join and have a team. KU is looking at having a team and Ola in HREO is looking into more info about the event and how to pay the registration fee.

Public Relations Chair: Thelma Simons
This committee worked to promote events for the professional development committee, maintain the web site, help generate emails and messages that need to go out, and get articles into the Oread. The newest projects were to generate certificates of recognition and they have been working on upgrading the web site that will launch in the next couple of weeks. The main goal is to generate interest in who we are and what we do in general.
Danny told the group that Thelma was president of this group and has been on ever since - she has been a part of the group and a leader for a long time. She is rotating off this year and it will be hard to imagine not having Thelma in the room anymore. She is always dedicated and willing to do the work that needs to be done, always gracious and never taking the credit for herself. Thank you for your many years of service, Thelma!

Elections Chair: Rick Whitmore
This committee really has one job, to get you people into this room. The other piece is to reapportion and since this was a census year we did that and now there are six more senators because Unclassified Staff numbers  had grown since the last census. This is all a very spelled out procedure and we are making this even more documented. The committee also helps to recruit future senators and persuade them to say yes when we ask them to run.
The list of new senators is below along with current senators and the officers that were elected.

University Support Staff – Maxine Younes unable to attend so no report.

Old business:
Election of Secretary: Angie Claussen was nominated for two positions and was put on the ballot for the highest position. This meant that we did not have any nominations for secretary. She was not elected and now we need to vote elect a secretary.
Angie Claussen nominated for Secretary and was elected unanimously.

New Business
Gail James asked if there is any kind of diversity initiative to make sure this group is more diverse. Danny was not aware of a diversity initiative for this group but agreed that we have to do a better job of nominating a more diverse group.

The meetings was adjourned at 12:40 p.m.
